The Film Composer's Workstation, UCLA Extension and Teaching

In 2001 I taught a month long seminar entitled "The Composer's Workstation" for "Film Training Ireland." It was a blast! Not only were the students wonderful musicians and eager to learn, but I immediately felt at home in Dublin.

Craig Stuart Garfinkle, Film ComposerThe seminar focused on techniques for composing to picture using the Mac G4, Logic Audio, Cubase, Digital Performer, digital video, Native Instruments, Sample Tank, Reason, Waves, ProTools and a host of other samplers and synths.

But what was most important to me was teaching the students how to find their own individual voice as a composer while using the same technology that most other composers use.

I presently teach Film Composing III and IV for UCLA Extension and can regularly can be found lecturing on Film Music and Film Music Technology. I am also wrapping up my first book on the subjects for Sound.org (The publishing division of the Waves Plug-Ins).
